Field Compensation System (FCS)

  • The first line of defense in our effort to create a homogeneous magnetic field environment is the Field Compensation System, which is designed to counter the earth’s magnetic field in the experimental building. Three large coils are used to reduce the field inside EB-2 to 20 milliGauss, twenty-five times less than the ambient field strength. It is important that the FCS coils be symmetric relative to the Magnetic Shield Enclosure, which leads to interesting challenges in the design of the support structure due to interferences with the building crane.
